The Number 23

I saw this one today, its not often that i write a same day review but i shouldnt think it will make the standard any higher! Sorry. I wasnt really sure what to expect here, Jim Carrey usually annoys me, but seems to do much better in more serious films such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and here he did it again.

It took me about half an hour of the film to get over the Jim Carreyness that the film began with, but once the drama started kicking in and there was less smiling it all got much more exciting. Its quite a complicated plot and yet makes perfect sense, although if you fell asleep as some people i know are prone to you might lose the plot slightly! The opening credits introduce the idea of the number 23, briefly and without you really being able to acknowledge much more text than the number itself and the fact that it can be found in many dramatic events from throughout time. Its a good introduction as it means you start looking for the number. There are plenty of twists and your suspisions are continually bounced from character to character, which makes the conclusion all the more of a shock. I think in comparison to the film itself the ending is kind of weak, but it is a nice moral conclusion! I never really thought of Jim Carrey as sexy, but he actually pulls it of as part of his character here! (just thought i would add that in!) Definatly worth seeing.

Ghost Rider

As usual i have saved up a bunch of cinema trips to review them all at once. This was a fun film, nothing special, lots of colour and drama but i was left with a sense of dissapointment I cant quite explain. There was nothing really original in the enemies of the hero, and it was another story of superhero conquering evil. Admittedly whilst being a demon himself which adds a newish slant to it but it still didnt feel new. The ending was I think the main dissapointment, it just seemed to close with no actual close, even though the story was wrapped up. Maybe thats what was intended but i didnt like it.

However, that makes it sound pretty bad and it wasnt. It was enjoyable, and Nicholas Cage is always fun, he gives it a good go and it is certainly colourful. Worth seeing but maybe, seeing as there is so much stuff out at the moment wait for the DVD.

Notes on a Scandal

This was my first free film (i now work in a cinema!!) so it was exciting anyway. The actual film was brilliant. It is a twisted view of a teacher who has a relationship with an underage student and her over obsessive friend who takes advantage of the knowledge. It was going to be hard to go wrong with Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett, and although the story itself was twisted and strange and creepy it was a truly exceptional film.

It had a very natural look to it, no glamour or bright colour, just an every day school, with everyday people. I didnt know Judi Dench could have so much evil in her although i still came away pitying her more than hating her. Definatly worth seeing if purely for the performances, but it is creepy, so be warned!!
