Superman

Superman was for me the best film of the summer. I hadnt seen the originals when i went to see it (i now own them) but it didnt matter cos it didnt really follow on. Kevin Spacey’s Lex Luther was brilliantly evil, and he is the one who really stands out for me. There is much less ’save america’ in this one in comparison to the old ones which i think is a definate improvement. But if you havnt seen it yet you definatly should.

There was something about this film, that I can’t quite pinpoint, that left me feeling a bit “oh…is that it?”

I think because Superman is pretty much invulnerable it’s a flaw in his character. How can suspense be built by a character that had limitless strength and pretty much invincibility? I know with Kryptonite there is potential, but from what I remember about it, in this film he didn’t seem harmed by it, it just made him a bit sleepy! Unlike the old films it didn’t replace this lack of suspense by emotion or sheer wonder, in my opinion. I was pretty underwhelmed by Lois Lane in this film too. Kate Bosworth was the worst thing about it.

Though Kevin Spacey was ace as Lex Luthor and Brandon Routh did well too. When I first saw a picture of him I wasn’t impressed - he seemed a bit GQ to be Clarke Kent. The effects were top notch as well, the opening genuinely impressive!

I think maybe this film didn’t appeal to me because I just am not much of a Superman fan. Much prefer Batman!
